Roof framing to NZS 3604
Your roof, and what NZS 3604 asks of its rafters, beams, purlins, verge, trusses and ceiling framing, each with its clause.
- NZS 3604:2011
Roof framing
- Rafters
- 290 × 45
- Purlins
- 1400 mm (1.4 m) spacing
- Ceiling joists
- 140 × 35
- Ceiling battens
- 70 × 35
How it is worked out
Rafters
3.6 m at 900 mm spacing in a High wind zone, the table's spans times 1.1: 290 × 45, spanning up to 3.63 m, fixing E; or 190 × 70, spanning up to 3.85 m, fixing E; or 190 × 90, spanning up to 4.18 m, fixing E
Why A rafter carries the roof from the wall plate up to the ridge, so its size follows its span, how far apart the rafters are and how heavy the roof is. Wind lifts a roof, so the zone's factor shortens the spans.
NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.3, Table 10.1(a)
Purlins
70 × 45 over supports at 900 mm spacing, High wind zone: 1400 mm (1.4 m) spacing with fixing U; 1200 mm (1.2 m) spacing with fixing T; 900 mm spacing with fixing T
Why Purlins carry the roofing across the rafters or trusses. On the flat they span the rafter or truss spacing, and the wind zone sets how far apart they go and how they are fixed; on edge they span between walls.
NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.16, Table 10.10
70 × 45 purlins on the flat over supports at 900 mm spacing, by wind zone, Table 10.10 Wind zone Spacing and fixing Low 1800 mm (1.8 m) spacing with fixing T; 1200 mm (1.2 m) spacing with fixing T; 900 mm spacing with fixing S Medium 1800 mm (1.8 m) spacing with fixing U; 1200 mm (1.2 m) spacing with fixing T; 900 mm spacing with fixing T High 1400 mm (1.4 m) spacing with fixing U; 1200 mm (1.2 m) spacing with fixing T; 900 mm spacing with fixing T Very high 1050 mm (1.05 m) spacing with fixing U; 900 mm spacing with fixing T Extra high 900 mm spacing with fixing U Ceiling joists
3 m at 600 mm spacing, any wind zone: 140 × 35, spanning up to 3.3 m; or 140 × 45, spanning up to 3.6 m
Why Ceiling joists carry only the ceiling across the room, so their size follows their span and how far apart they are, the same in every wind zone.
NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.6, Table 10.3
Ceiling battens
70 × 35 at 600 mm spacing, spanning up to 900 mm Ceiling: A lining lighter than 17.5 kg/m². Solid 70 × 45 dwangs at no more than 900 mm spacing between the chords, rafters or joists may carry it instead of battens.
Why Battens carry the ceiling lining between the joists, truss chords or rafters they are fixed to, so their span decides their size; the heaviest ceiling they may carry is fixed.
NZS 3604:2011 13.2, Table 13.1
Fixing types
Type E: 2 skew nails, 90 × 3.15, and 2 wire dogs, or another holding at least 4.7 kN. Type S: 2 gun nails, 90 × 3.15, or another holding at least 0.8 kN. Type T: 1 self-drilling screw, 10g, 80 mm long, or another holding at least 2.4 kN. Type U: 1 self-drilling screw, 14g type 17, 100 mm long, or another holding at least 5.5 kN.
Why The tables name each fixing by a letter; here is what each letter used above is made of and what it must hold.

Other members
Type a span for each member your roof has. A member left empty is skipped.
Valley rafters
- Not sized: type a valley rafter's span if the roof has a valley NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.3, Table 10.1(b)
Ridge beams
- Not sized: type the ridge beam's span if the roof has one NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.5, Table 10.2
Underpurlins
- Not sized: type the span between struts if the roof has underpurlins NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.9, Table 10.5
Underpurlin struts
- Not sized: type a strut's length if the underpurlins are strutted NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.10, Table 10.6
Strutting beams
Strut spacing
- Not sized: type the strutting beam's span if the struts stand on one NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.11, Table 10.7
Truss fixing at the wall
Truss spacing
- Not sized: type the loaded dimension of the wall under the trusses if the roof is trussed NZS 3604:2011 10.2.2.6, Table 10.14, Figure 10.21
Tile battens
- 50 × 40 under light roof cladding, spanning up to 900 mm between rafters at 900 mm spacing, at no more than 370 mm spacing, fixing S NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.16.7, Table 10.12
Dummy rafters on sarking
- On sarking or a lining up to 20 mm thick, 25 × 1 steel straps at no more than 600 mm spacing (read at a rafter spacing of 900 mm) NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.17, Table 10.13, Figure 10.20
Verge outriggers
Outrigger
- 90 × 45 on edge, at no more than 1200 mm (1.2 m) spacing for a cantilever up to 600 mm, to a 90 × 45 fly rafter on edge NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.15.3, Table 10.9
Verandah beams
- Not sized: type the verandah beam's span if there is a verandah NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.12, Table 10.8
Verandah posts
- Not sized: type the roof area on a post if the roof stands on posts NZS 3604:2011 9.1 to 9.3, Tables 9.1 and 9.2, Figure 9.1
Ceiling runners
Spacing
- Not sized: type a ceiling runner's span if the joists sit on runners NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.7, Table 10.4
Ceiling openings
- Not sized: type the trimmer's span if the ceiling has an opening NZS 3604:2011 13.3, Table 13.2
- A rafter running unbroken over 2 or more spans, not birdsmouthed where it crosses a support, may span 10% further, and a ceiling joist unbroken over 2 or more spans 10% further. A rafter running on over a support is fixed there with twice the capacity its type holds. NZS 3604:2011 Table 10.1 notes (1) and (2), Table 10.3
- An underpurlin unbroken over 2 or more spans may span 10% further. Where an underpurlin, strutting beam or verandah beam runs on over a support, it is fixed there with twice its type's capacity. The verandah table allows for rafters running up to 750 mm past the beam to carry a soffit. A ridge beam's straps take 30 × 2.5 nails. NZS 3604:2011 Tables 10.2, 10.5, 10.7 and 10.8 notes
- The truss fixings are for a simple layout of trusses; girder and hip trusses are fixed as their design says, and the fabricator's fixing is used where it is stronger. NZS 3604:2011 10.2.2.6, C10.2.2.6
- A post holding up a roof open to the wind on one side, two sides meeting at a corner, or three sides is held down by its footing and by the connections at each of its ends. NZS 3604:2011 9.2.1, 9.3
- Purlin spacing goes no wider than the roofing maker lets its cladding span. NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.16.1, C10.2.1.16.1
- The fixings are sized for the stronger uplift at the roof's edges, so they hold anywhere on it. NZS 3604:2011 Tables 10.10 and 10.11 notes
- Blocking of the outriggers' size goes between them along the wall's line, and the purlins are fixed to it and to the fly rafter. NZS 3604:2011 10.2.1.15.3, Figure 10.16(a)
